Area 30 Panel 74 General Service Conference Survey

The General Service Conference

“We may not need a General Service Conference to ensure our own recovery. We do need it to ensure the recovery of the alcoholic who still stumbles in the darkness one short block from this room. We need it to ensure the recovery of a child being born tonight, destined for alcoholism. We need it to provide, in keeping with our Twelfth Step, a permanent haven for all alcoholics who, in the ages ahead, can find in A.A. that rebirth that brought us back to life.”

- Bernard B. Smith, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees

What is the General Service Conference?

The General Service Conference refers to both:

  • The service structure of AA groups, Districts, and Areas throughout the U.S. and Canada

  • The annual meeting of Conference delegates

The General Service Conference is the practical means by which A.A. Group conscience can express itself in matters that concern the Fellowship as a whole. The existence of the Conference is moreover a guarantee that the Fellowship will be able to function under all conditions. It is, in effect, the successor to the founders of AA, ensuring the continuity of the work within the framework of the Twelve Traditions and the Twelve Concepts.

Annual Timeline

Throughout the year, topics/questions are submitted to the Conference Steering Committee for inclusion in the Conference agenda. Submissions can be made by individual members, Groups, Intergroups, Regions or Board Trustees.

December - Draft agenda made available to Delegates and the Fellowship

February - Final agenda made available to Delegates and the Fellowship

March through April - Assemblies and other Delegate outreach take place to discuss the agenda items and gather group conscience from across A.A.

Late April - The full Conference meets to discuss the agenda items.

May through June - Assemblies and other Delegate outreach take place to discuss what occurred and what was recommended as a result of the Conference meeting.

Summer - Final report from the General Service Conference is published.

Much more detail on the Conference process is available in the AA World Service Manual.
